LALDEF could not serve as many people as it does without the many volunteers who donate their time.  

We currently have openings for the following volunteer positions:

Drivers Education Instructor

LALDEF eagerly anticipates offering several drivers education workshops in 2020/2021 following the recent legislation change in NJ that provides access to drivers' licenses regardless of citizenship status.

LALDEF's Adult Education team is seeking a volunteer instructor to support and train new drivers in the Trenton community.

  • We expect the workshops to be a four-part series offered several times throughout the year.

  • Course will cover topics such as knowing your rights, the process to obtaining a drivers license, driver safety, rules and regulations when driving, defensive driving techniques, and other basic driving skills.

  • Tentative Fall 2020, dates to be determined

  • No certification to Drivers Education required, though experience is appreciated

  • The instructor should be able to instruct in English or Spanish

High School Equivalency Instructor - Reading & Writing

LALDEF's Adult Education team is seeking a volunteer instructor to teach a Reading and Writing course this fall. LALDEF is happy to offer one of the only Spanish HSE courses in Mercer County. The purpose of this course is to aid students as they build on their foundational Spanish skills necessary to complete high school equivalency exams, such as TASK and HiSET, and to earn their secondary diplomas.

  • Classes are taught in Spanish

  • The 16 week semester meets two times a week for two hours (days and times to be determined)

  • Course includes Reading and Writing skills

  • Course curriculum, along with detailed lesson plans are provided for the instructor

  • Instructors should have experience in language arts instruction

Our ongoing volunteer opportunities fall into two general categories: (a) Spanish speakers that can assist with our legal services and Community ID Cards and (b) tutors and mentors.

LEGAL INTAKE VOLUNTEERS assist clients with filling out intake and screening forms and document collection.

CLIENT ADVOCATES assist clients in filing wage theft claims, applying for health insurance, enrolling children in school, and more. Flexible schedule during working hours.

COMMUNITY ID CARDS ASSISTANTS help staff process the necessary paperwork and assist with the processing and distribution of Mercer County Area Community ID Cards.

All legal volunteers must speak both English and Spanish fluently. Hours vary widely and, depending on the instance, can be flexible. Locations also depend on the opportunity, but generally are in Trenton.


LALDEF engages a wide number of volunteer tutors for both our FUTURO college preparation program, which supports and guides first and second generation high school students in their pursuit of higher education, and a variety of adult education initiatives.

Skills sought include: FUTURO seeks volunteers to assist with core subject areas (English, Math, History, & Science) as well as volunteers able to help prepare students for standardized testing such as the ACT and SAT.

ADULT EDUCATION volunteers work with Spanish-speaking students preparing to take their High School Equivalency Test (TASC) and gain their high school diplomas. Tutors must have a high school diploma or higher education degree. Prior teaching or tutoring experience is preferred, but not required.

All LALDEF volunteers must agree to undergo a background check. Most require that the volunteer be at least 21 years old, but exceptions are made.
